First it’s Memorial Day, then Flag Day, then the FOURTH of JULY! So naturally summer is the best time to deck the halls with some red, white and blue of course! I want to share with you some fun ways to incorporate vintage charm into your patriotic farmhouse decor.
Vintage Crocks – I have been an avid collector of Red Wing vintage crocks for a couple of years, which has graduated into collections of any vintage stoneware! This beautiful pottery with the blue accents makes for the perfect pieces to display greenery or a few American flags.
Hang a large American flag – I lucked out and found this flag in the giveaway pile at my workplace, but I have seen glorious vintage American flags at flea markets and rummage sales, so keep an eye out! I think this makes such a statement and adds so much red, white and blue, all in one patriotic punch!
Red, white and blue books – garage sales and thrift stores are the best places to find vintage books. I collect books in all colors of the rainbow, just because they are great to use for all holidays. These are the perfect touch to any little cozy corner decorating space.
Vintage tins in red white and blue – vintage tins are all the rage right now and they look glorious with bunches of faux or fresh flowers arranged inside. I have seen many, many wonderful tins in hues of red and white, blue and white, or if you are lucky red, white and blue, like this Campfire Marshmallow tin!
Vintage soda crates – these are so versatile! I use soda crates for my end tables, to store magazines, to plant flowers or succulents, or just to display. They are so fantastic and the advertising is stunning! I am partial to Pepsi, as my family has always joked about our love for Pepsi.
Milk glass with red and blue accents – this is one of my favorites to collect because I find it everywhere and it is very inexpensive. This is a great choice if you are just starting to begin a collection of some sort. I am partial to FireKing milk glass in the tulip pattern for the 4th. I just recently found these polka dot patterned bowls, which are going to be a gift to another vintage lover I know!
Mini flags – now these don’t necessarily have to be “vintage” to add patriotism. Many of my mini flags are cheap dollar store ones. I am actually thinking it would be kind of fun to distress them and make them look older, can I do that? More on that to come!
Blue Ball jars – these jars are so much fun to add anywhere! I love using these in the spring, paired with fresh lilacs or even in the winter for an icy burst of turquoise. But I have to admit, they look pretty stellar all paired together with a little red, white, and blue mixed in! These are an item that you SHOULD be able to find at rummage sales and they SHOULD be quite inexpensive, so don’t be afraid to shop around.
Quilts – vintage quilts are new to me this year. This red, white, and blue quilt adds a burst of color to our living room space and it makes the perfect blanket to snuggle with too.
Watt Bowls – I love the muted colors of red, white and blue in these bowls. When decorating don’t be afraid to step away from the traditional red, white and blue colors. Muted hues can add the same spark to your 4th of July decor.
Vintage Signage – signs in red, white, and blue give a space a huge pop of color and their character and charm is unbeatable. Vintage signs can run a pretty penny, but if you are lucky, you may luck out and find one like this gem for 50 cents!
Finally add a President to the mix – this is a print that I put in an ornate frame, but SOMEDAY I want to find a vintage print of George Washington or Abraham Lincoln to hang on my walls, preferable one from an old one-room schoolhouse.VIn
That’s a wrap! There are so many wonderful ideas out there, these are only a few of my favorites. So don’t be afraid to sport some red, white, and blue in your home of the brave because this sweet land of liberty should be celebrated!
