Pack the Perfect “Vintage Style” Picnic

May 23, 2023 by thevettelfarm

Packing the perfect picnic entails three elements; good food, a good blanket, and a good basket. Using vintage elements for your picnic takes your picnic to another level of sophistication. The girls and I decided we wanted to create a bucket list of sorts for the summer and going on a picnic was at the top of our list! So let’s walk through the elements of the perfect “vintage style” picnic, so that you can add this to your bucket list for the summer too.

Good Food

Food is the central showpiece of every great picnic, so it deserves time and attention. We have been using the Wildgrain themed  subscription service to get the best artisanal breads, pastas, and pastries delivered to us each month. I love the idea of making one large sandwich to share with all for our picnic and the Wildgrain sourdough loaf was perfect for the job.  Living in North Dakota, our accessibility to great artisanal breads is limited, so Wildgrain has been a wonderful option for us! Not only do they have a great selection of breads, we also chose tasty pasta choices and received free croissants.  Check out more information here. I loaded up our sandwich with yummy delicatessen meats, cheeses, and a homemade vinaigrette. I used wax paper to wrap up the sandwich, which also gave it a vintage nod. To accompany our stunning sandwich, we added in fresh fruit, pickles and homemade lemonade in mason jars. I love using old fashioned mason jars because they keep everything intact and fresh.

Good Blanket

Now any old blanket will do, but a picnic is so much more magical with a vintage style blanket. My favorite type to use is a vintage quilt. The colors are spectacular and they offer the perfect place to enjoy your lunch and take in the sights. I collect quilts of every type and I often choose my not-so-perfect quilts for the job of picnic blanket. Pick a spot that is level and free from dirt and debris.

Good Basket

A good basket is quintessential to the perfect picnic. Vintage baskets are not only beautiful, but very functional. My favorite vintage baskets are those that include a stand inside or the coordinating set of silverware to use for your picnic. Vintage baskets have such wonderful quality and they lend their nostalgic charm to the picnic as well. They come in an array of colors and styles, my personal favorites are the green ones!

The only thing left to do is pick the perfect location and a pretty day to enjoy a picnic with friends or family. I almost forgot, don’t forget a sweet treat! This year we will be enjoying the fudge brownies from Wildgrain, so scrumptious! Check out all of the Wildgrain subscription options here! Everything from their pastries to pasta, they are all wonderful options for picnics, quick lunches, and day trips to the beach or lake. Use code: THEVETTELFARM for $10 off your first box! Everything comes straight to your door and is so convenient for those busy summer months.

This little garden planter is pieced together from broken vintage glassware and finished with stamped silverware tucked in like tiny heirlooms. Every crack, every pattern, every piece tells a story and now they’re all growing something new together.

A reminder that even the most delicate things can be remade into something beautiful again ✨

This may be one of my top favorite wreaths of all This may be one of my top favorite wreaths of all time. I find these exquisite oval, antique frames often and they are such a simple way to create a beautiful entrance at your front door. I use a small amount of floral wire to affix faux florals and a mini bird’s nest for Spring.

I think it would be fun to redesign this one for summer with lots of red, white, and blue! 🇺🇸
