I have said it before and I will say it again, it’s all in the DETAILS! Special details are what make renovations worth the extra time and effort. Incorporating special details into any historical project is extra important. Small elements like hardware, trim, and accent walls are all important decisions in the design process. Here are a few elements that we incorporated into the Victorian on Van Buren in the carriage house apartment to give it that extra charm.
Entryway
For this apartment we had to incorporate an entryway because it attached to a garage. To do this we knew we wanted to incorporate an antique door. We found an antique door with a window, which was perfect because it brought in natural light into the small, dark entry space. To finish off the antique door we knew it needed outstanding hardware and for that we found an abundance of amazing options with Nostalgic Warehouse.
We chose a doorknob from the Victorian collection in Timeless Bronze for the entry door. This hardware collection lends itself so nicely to the intricate style of the Victorian era where “more is more.” To see all of Nostalgic Warehouse’s vintage ornate options, click here! The timeless bronze finish was an excellent accent to the historically inspired trim in the apartment.
Kitchen Backsplash
A few years ago my Mom and I stumbled upon some antique ceiling tin. At the time we wanted to use that tin to accent the poker room in the main house of the Victorian on Van Buren. Ultimately we determined the area was too big and we stashed the antique tin in our memory. Fast forward two years and we knew we had to use the antique tin as a backsplash for this adorable kitchenette. The area was small enough for us to experiment with and it turned out amazing!
A few tips when using antique ceiling tin for any project:
- Antique ceiling tin sheets are heavy tin and very sharp. They can be difficult to work with, so use caution.
- Try to choose ceiling tiles that have minimal bending or damage if possible.
- Removing these ceiling tins from their original location is a difficult process, so it is not uncommon for these pieces to have some wear and imperfections.
- Remove loose paint before installation and coat with a quality polyurethane once installed.
- To cut antique ceiling tin you can use tin snips or a circular saw with a specialty blade for tin.
Kitchen Hardware
For this sweet and dainty kitchenette we found a very tiny kitchen cabinet to use for the sink. The kitchen cabinet hardware coordinated with the Victorian style of the entry doorknob. The dark contrast of the knobs added lots of interest to these tiny cabinets. The quality and craftsmanship of Nostalgic Warehouse is unmatched. Find our Victorian brass cabinet knobs here. The detail on these knobs is exquisite, see below!
So although this carriage house apartment is small, it is mighty. Paying attention to these small details is what truly made this space sparkle. Each of these three elements really brought more charm into the space by adding a historical emphasis.
