I met a follower this Fall that literally said to me, “I’m hunting here at this flea market asking myself what would Courtney buy!” So I thought it would be fun to put together a list each month of items that you may want to add to your hunt list as you venture out to garage sales, flea markets, estate sales, and antique shops.
This month’s list centers around winter decor – winter greens, bright whites, and cozy textures. After the holidays it can be a little disheartening to put away all the Christmas charm, so these pieces are critical to keeping our spirits bright in January.
1. Sleds
I’m starting with my favorite of the entire list! I love to pick up vintage sleds everywhere! Currently my collection houses an old Victorian sled, sled runners to an old wagon, an antique sled made from two old boards and the quintessential sleds from the 50s and 60s. All of these are so easy and fun to decorate with! Hang them up, use them on a table, display it outside, wherever you use them, they are sure to brighten any space.
2. Skis
Now I am no skier, but vintage skis are COOL! They have so much patina, just think about the miles they have seen. There are so many fun options to display skis – hang them up, add a wreath, or prop them up to prominently display. I think they would be so fun to pair with vintage ski posters someday.
3. Cable Knit Sweaters & Mittens
This year I acquired my first vintage sweater with the most darling deer knit picture. It is oh-so-cozy and so darn adorable hung up in our entryway. I am currently on the hunt for some cute vintage mittens to display too. Vintage clothing has never been my forte but it is slowly growing on me!
4. Wool Blankets
Who doesn’t love a cozy wool blanket to snuggle up with on a cold winter day after playing in the snow? These blankets add so much cheerful color to any space. Hudson Bay blankets and Pendlelton blankets usually run a high price point, but most vintage wool blankets run in the $5-$25 range. As you are shopping make sure to look for holes and that the blanket doesn’t smell musty.
5. Ironstone
Did someone say winter white? Ironstone has the prettiest winter white tones and paired with cedar, you can’t beat this combination! Ironstone is becoming very popular, but is so fun to hunt for. Pitchers, bowls, place, settings, or butter pats – all ironstone has such a classic look that is perfect for your winter wonderland.
6. Ice Skates
Now I see these often but they add so much winter glam to any space. Who doesn’t love to get out on the ice and pretend that you are Michelle Kwan (she was my favorite) only to fall on your bottom over and over and over again. I will stick to the skates for home decor!
7. Thermoses
Rich, delightful hot cocoa – the perfect treat after an exhilarating snow ball fight. Vintage thermoses are so nostalgic and they have so much character and charm. I love grouping these in various spots around the house in different color patterns. Thermoses are really great for any season, but I always think they fit best with WINTER!
Well I hope I gave you a few ideas to add to your hunt list. I would love to hear what other items you would add to your January hunt list too, comment below! Stay tuned for the February hunt list coming soon, think lots of L-O-V-E, lovely vintage!
