The postcards of yesteryear were the only means of communication for many. Each postcard carried a special message and often a delightful piece of art with it as well. Antique postcards have some of the most charismatic images, so why not reuse those images for a piece of large scale art!
This project is made even more special if the postcard is one from a loved one or family member. One of my favorite projects of all time is an envelope from my Great-Grandma that I blew up and framed. See below!
You can enlarge your postcard or envelope to any size of your liking. I used an old sign and repurposed the other side to make these which made it really easy. Walk through the steps below to make a one of a kind piece of art for your home.
Supplies
Vintage postcard or envelope
Old sign that you plan to repurpose OR
Frame of your choice
Directions
1. Choose your postcard and scan it. I try to scan it in a large format JPEG so that when its enlarged it won’t be as grainy. I have even used my phone to take a closeup photo, then cropped it and used that as my JPEG.
2. I used Staples.com to print my postcard to the size of my sign (20×24). I printed it in a matte poster format. The cost of this ranges from $15-$30 depending on the size of your sign. There are many of great poster printing services including Shutterfly, VistaPrint, and Zazzle.
3. I used the back of an old sign, which allowed me to inset the poster into the frame. I then used an Exacto knife to cut the poster to the perfect size.
4. Use Modge Podge to adhere your poster to your wood frame. At this point you could also just frame your poster postcard into a frame.
Let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to help! This is such a fun project, the hardest part is picking the beautiful vintage postcard to blow up because they are all so stunning!
